Growing Cannabis Are Marijuana Clones or Seeds Better?

Why you would choose Marijuana Clones or Seeds when growing cannabis?

Let’s start with cannabis seeds. Once you have your item list for growing cannabis together, the next step is to purchase seeds.

Personally, I have tried out a few sites and I always end up coming back to North Atlantic Seed Co, Seedsman, or one of those, but Seedsman has been around for a while. (use code: 20AS-885602 to save an extra 10% off your order from Seedsman)

North Atlantic Seed Co

  • It is a female owned company
  • I have interacted with them over email a few times.
  • You get that small company feel where it feels like they value your business.
  • They are always giving out freebie seeds (awesome to try new strains and maybe try an auto flowering vs photoperiod depending on the direction you go. More on what the differences of those two are later) which is awesome.
  • They are based out of Maine and to this day I haven’t had a single seed not sprout.

Buying seeds is the cheaper approach compared to purchasing clones.

If you are new grower there are a couple things to watch out for:

  • You will see a bunch of stuff talking about the weed profile,
  • the yield you can expect,
  • the heights,
  • aromas,
  • and all the stuff you will likely read into as you learn more

However, the big pieces to pay attention to are:

auto flower vs. photoperiod and male/female/feminized seeds.

Males do NOT produce buds. They can also destroy a female crop (guys ruin everything. They will make the buds full of seeds).

Have you ever grown anything before?

In my opinion, if you haven’t grown before, newer to growing or simply don’t want to take the risk of missing a male plant just don’t buy mixed seeds.

I only buy feminized seeds or auto flowers.

Auto flowers by default are feminized because they flower and therefore have to be a female. I will go into more detail in another section, but the simple explanation for auto flower is that no matter the amount of light and conditions of your plant at a certain stage of the plants life it will begin to throw buds.

On the other hand, photoperiod will continue to grow indefinitely until it gets a certain amount of light which triggers it to throw buds. For beginners or those that just want a simple process and good yield,

go with auto flowers.

Auto flowers have less thinking and steps to get to the end game of consumable bud that you grew yourself. If you go with seeds aim for female/ feminized seeds and likely auto flower if you are newer to growing.

Save the photoperiod for your next crop or down the line when you have had a few successes.

If you want to further reduce the risk of something going wrong

During your grow you can go the way of buying clones or growing your own.

What are clones you ask?

Simple, as the name implies, they are a copy of another plant. The most simple answer for photoperiod weed plants you can take a branch, cut it off and make it grow roots.

weed clones

You would really only do this on a female so you can guarantee a female plant as it is a clone,

hence the nickname,

and it will come multiple inches tall for you. I would argue the most difficult or risky stage of your weed grow is in the very start. It can be easy to kill your seedling but as the plant matures it grows like …..

a weed.

Marijuana, just like weeds in a lawn, are resilient and harder to kill once established. Now obviously you want to baby your plant so you get the most bud as possible and it tastes amazing.

The other benefit to getting clones is since the plant will come already a few inches into the grow it will reach maturity faster and the risk of it dying if you follow my steps are lower.

The draw backs to going with clones is they are going to be photoperiod. You will need to control and pay attention to the light cycle when growing cannabis

In the most simplistic terms, you are copying a plant that is partially through its life and getting ready to flower.

Having a copy of a plant later in its life is bad because it means less time to grow taller and stronger to produce buds. If a plant is expected to flower in 8 weeks for an auto and you cut the clown at 4 weeks, you have taken 4 weeks of growth out of the equation and the bud you have at the end will be a lot less.

This is why when you purchase or make your own clones they are of photoperiods.

I said in the seed section above, photoperiods require a certain condition before they start flowering. In my beginners guide you will have to pay attention to the light cycles, which I mention here, to prevent issues.

Buying auto flowering seeds is the beginner friendly approach to growing cannabis.

Mixture of both

If you want to know what I do I now use a mix of both. I start new strains from seed and then make clones of the varieties I like. Sometimes I get a freebie auto flower seed and it’s a super easy grow for me.

When I first started I grew auto flowers and I am glad I did.

Far less problems came up.

It wasn’t until I started messing around with things and trying to squeeze out every extra possible ounce I could get from a plant that I started causing plants to act up. I then started cloning my own plants and sharing them with friends. You will get there eventually if you follow along.
