What to consider when buying a weed grow light.
I need to start by saying, when you read this article title did you read: Review in 20….22 and then immediately think of Taylor Swift’s song “feeeellliinnngggg tweeennttttyyyytwwwoooo!!” Ok I am done now. Let’s stick to marijuana grow lights clearly better at that…
If you’re looking to grow marijuana indoors, you’ve probably already figured out that the best way to get the best yield is by using a marijuana grow light. But how do you choose the best grow light for a large yield?
If you’re growing marijuana indoors and want to get the biggest yield possible, you’ll need the right marijuana grow light. There are plenty of options out there, but they all have their benefits and drawbacks.
The best marijuana grow lights for large yields will be able to cover a lot of square footage, produce enough light for your plants to be healthy and productive, and be easy to maintain. This can be hard to do—it’s important that your plants receive the right amount of light so that they can grow quickly, but not too much light or else the leaves will burn from overexposure (and if that happens, it can lead to other problems).
But don’t worry! I’ve done all the research for you so that you don’t have to worry about finding the best grow lights for large yields yourself. We’ve found some great options at every different price point—from cheap ones under $100 that are still effective at producing high-yield harvests all the way up through $2K+ options that can produce even larger harvests than ever before.
If you’re looking to grow large yields of marijuana indoors, then you’ll need to know what the best grow light is for your situation. Whether you’re growing your first or fifth crop, it’s important to know what factors should be taken into account when choosing the right marijuana grow lighting system. Here are some things to consider:
- How much space do you have available for your plants? The more space, the more lights you can use (and therefore the more plants).
- How big is your grow room or tent? If it’s small, you may want to stick with a smaller light; if it’s large, then you can get away with a larger one.
- What kind of environment do you want your plants to grow in? For example, if you’re growing in a greenhouse or outdoors space like a shed, temperature control may not be an issue.
- How many plants do you want to grow? How high will they be? This will help determine how much wattage (or lumens) of light is needed per plant.
- What kind of marijuana plants are they? Auto-flowers need as much light as fast as possible because their growing time is fixed genetically. Photoperiod seeds can grow until you change their light schedule to start blooming; this allows you an extended time period to grow to the desired height to improve yield. Make sure to read my post on autoflower vs photoperiod weed and if you need seeds make sure to check out Seedsman
- How much money do you want to spend on your lighting setup? There are options for each price point all of which can yield you enough weed to justify growing your own weed. - Do they need the amount of light offered by the most powerful marijuana grow lights (like HPS or LED)?
Weed Grow Guides Product Review:
I have used a few different marijuana grow lights since I first started growing indoors. When I first got into this as I said on my Intro that I was really trying to grow on a budget. Minimal investment and maximum yield I could. My thought was if I could grow enough to outpace what I spent than it was better than buying from the dispensary.
As I got more into growing weed I continued to upgrade my setup and try different methods of growing. My suggestion is based on what yielded the most in the same amount of time compared to price.
Staying true to how I like to review things I will break my recommendations into the following categories:
- Budget
- Mid-tier option
- Best Overall
My first light will fall into the budget category so it only makes sense to start with the….
Budget – Phlizon 600W LED Grow Light
It is in my opinion when it comes to LED lights the amazon reported “watts” is a bunch of garbage. LED’s aren’t like traditional light so they claim it is the equivalent of “x” amount of wattage of a traditional bulb. We could get into a scientific reason of what LED lights but there is no point to wasting the time.
The simple answer is it works. It isn’t going to grow monster plants in 2 months but it will be able to grow more than enough weed from an autoflower if it is left turned on 20+ hours a day. This is a newer version of the one I bought originally but my first grow I yield 4 ounces a plant on the auto’s I grew.
So, the light works, but it definitely has room for improvement to increase yields in the same grow time if you are willing to spend a little more. Overall, the Phlizon 600W LED Grow Light isn’t bad for the price but definitely could do better if you want to grow multiple plants like my picture above.
Mid-Tier – Vivosun 1200W Cree Cob LED Light
After realizing that my budget Phlizon Grow Light wasn’t pumping out as much light as I needed if I wanted to grow plants that hit the top of the tent in a few months of grow time, then I need to upgrade my light. That is when I went out and picked up the 1200W Cree Cob Light. It comes with cooling fans because the heat thrown from this light is certainly more.
With the reflective walls of my tent, I fired it up and looked inside. I felt like Anakin from Star Wars, “It’s WORKING. IT’S WORKING!”
The marijuana grow light was much brighter than my old light, I felt like I was getting a tan and wanted to grab a beverage with a little umbrella in it to celebrate the new tropical oasis I had created. All kidding aside I wished I bought this light from the start over the little one that I used for a few grows. If you want to grow a couple plants you need more and bigger lights to cover the entire area and multiple layers of a larger plant.
Best Overall – Spider Farmer SF4000 LED Grow Light
I mean honestly this thing is a beast. This lighting is powerful and you will see the difference in your yields. Not only is the sizable light more fine-tuned and sleeker, but it throws the heat better due to the higher quality materials used. Higher quality materials mean more light which in turn means bigger and happier plants. If you want those football sized nugs you need a high-quality light. The LED’s help make the energy cost more reasonable. Those HPS lights can be hot, expensive and if not taken care of dangerous.
This is why the Spider Farmer SF4000 is the best overall if budget wasn’t a concern, but get those massive marijuana yields.
Regardless, you need a light to grow indoors.
No matter which of these lights you decide to go with, you could be soon harvesting your own home grown weed. If you haven’t already, make sure to read my post for beginners needing step by step instructions of how to grow your own weed at home. Doesn’t it make sense to grow ounces of your own weed for a fraction of the cost of buying it from a dispensary?
